Bio-1 County College Resources

Brookdale Community College:

Offers an AS degree in Mathematics/ Science with a Biology option.

Offers additional degees: Baccalaureate, Advanced through partners Communiversity: Masters in Engineering Management and Information Technology and Engineering certificates through NJIT.

K-12 Connections:

  • Administers the Math/ Science/ Technology Network for 27 school districts, providing 30 full-day professional development workshops for teachers in STEM topics annually.
  • Runs the OPTIMIST, OPporTunIty through Math, Science and Technology, (grant-funded program to strengthen the teaching and learning of algebra in middle schools in three Abbott districts in Monmouth County.)
  • Offers New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey, an alternate route teacher preparation program in partnership with New Jersey City University.
  • Monmouth County Vocational School District High Tech High School is on the Brookdale Community College (BCC) campus; High Tech High students take 20 credits at BCC in conjunction with their studies.

Provides customized training for biotechnology companies under the NJ Department of Labor Biotechnology Consortium.

Mercer County Community College:

Offers an AS degree in Biology which prepares students for transfer to upper division colleges and universities.  Individual courses are offered in Forensics and Genetics.

Offers a smooth pathway to other area colleges through articulation agreements. 

Eligible students may participate in an honors research program in conjunction with Rider University and Princeton University.

K-12 Connections:

  • Biology faculty participate in Super Science Weekend at the NJ State  Museum.
  • Faculty conduct demonstrations at area Middle Schools.

Provides customized training for biotechnology companies under the NJ Department of Labor Biotechnology Consortium.

Middlesex County College:

Offers an AAS degree in Biotechnology which prepares students for career opportunities in pharmaceutical firms and biotechnology companies.

Offers Biotechnology courses leading to an AS degree that prepares students for transfer to upper division colleges and universities.

Credit granting Biotechnology Program collaborates with Rutgers University.

K-12 Connections:

  • Biology faculty, with facilitation of the Office of School Relations, has offered summer biotechnology workshops for high school students.
  • Biology faculty recently applied for an NSF grant to provide “bio-kits” for training community college and high school instructors/students in biotechnology.

Provides customized training for biotechnology companies under the NJ Department of Labor Biotechnology Consortium.

Raritan Valley Community College:

Offers both an AAS degree and an AS degree in Biotechnology, as well as a certificate program.

Through an articulation agreement with Kean University, students can apply to transfer for BS and MS in Biotechnology at Kean; Other articulation agreements are in process.

RVCC’s University Center offers a Graduate Certificate in Technical Communications through NJIT and a Global MBA with Kean University.

K-12 Connections:

  • With sponsorship of the HealthCare Institute of NJ, conducts annual Life Science Career Awareness Day program with 9-11 participating companies, 10 participating high schools and serving about 200 students  each  year.
  • Workshops and summer institutes for high school science faculty on such topics as Genomics, Protein Purification and Forensic Science techniques.
  • Active partnership with Somerset County Vocational Technical High School for an Academy for Health and Medical Sciences, a career academy through which talented high school students concurrently complete an AS in General Science.
  • A wide range of science related youth enrichment offerings (ages 7 – 12.)
  • Online teacher professional development for elementary science teachers.
  • Alternate Route Teacher Preparation program.
  • A Bridge to Employment career academic readiness program (targeted to health careers) for high school youth in Bound Brook funded by ETHICON and in partnership with Somerset Medical Center.

Extensive customized training with industry partners in addition to training through the NJ Department of Labor Biotechnology Consortium.

Facilities: In 2006, the College opened a $1.5 million, newly renovated 2500 square ft. Institute for Biotechnology Education, designed with input from four-year institutions and industry partners, with two well-equipped labs, a Cell Culture room, and a classroom with multimedia capacity.
