DeVry University Announces a New Associate in Applied Science Degree Program

The Electroneurodiagnostic Technology (ENDT) program, offered in cooperation with the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at the JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ, began offering courses at the North Brunswick campus since November 2007.

ENDT professionals record and analyze electrical activity in the brain and nervous system, and are often employed in locations such as private neurology practices, acute care hospitals, sleep study laboratories, university research centers, and private health care companies.

Dr. Chris Grevesen, President of DeVry University North Brunswick says, “Electroneurodiagnostic Technology is a fascinating and potentially very rewarding occupation for anyone interested in working at the intersection of technology and healthcare. DeVry University, with its well known electronics programs complemented by solid general education, will prepare students to undertake intensive didactic and clinical work.”

Students in the ENDT program will complete general education and electrical instrumentation courses during their first two semesters at the 630 U.S. Highway One campus, followed by several specialized courses in such topics as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, pharmacology and correlative neurology at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center.

Students will also complete 1440 hours of clinical rotations as part of a comprehensive clinical practicum at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute during their third, fourth and fifth semesters, during which they will rotate through the clinical laboratories of electroencephalography, polysomnography, video monitoring, nerve conduction studies, stimulus-evoked and event-related potential recording and intraoperative monitoring. Students will also have elective opportunities in such disciplines as autonomic nervous system testing, oculography, pupillometry and neurophysiologic research.

Dr. Martin Gizzi, Chairman of the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center, says, “As a provider of patient services in sleep testing and epilepsy diagnosis, we are acutely aware of how hard it is to find qualified technologists. Having a degree program that ensures consistent levels of competence and understanding of basic science will be enormously helpful. The NJ Neuroscience Institute is proud to partner with DeVry University in producing what will be the region's supply of superior EEG and polysomnography technologists.”  Students who complete the clinical rotations successfully are prepared to take certification exams in electroencephalography and other ENDT modalities through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).

ENDT graduates can expect to have high-paying career opportunities in hospitals, sleep study centers, neurology offices, and private healthcare companies, and will be qualified to assist physicians in diagnosing neurological problems in patients by performing an array of sophisticated tests including EEG, long-term epilepsy monitoring, evoked potentials, nerve conduction studies, polysomnography (sleep studies), and intra-operative monitoring.

“DeVry University’s new associate degree program in ENDT fills a critical need in our region for healthcare technologists capable of administering sophisticated neurophysiologic tests that aid physicians in diagnosing disorders of the brain and nervous system,” says Dr. Grevesen

The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute serves as one of the most extensive clinical programs in the state for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with complex neurological diseases and injuries. Coupled with the most advanced technology and a professional support system, the physicians at the Institute are able to provide leading edge medical treatment with compassionate care. The Institute has consistently led the field of neuroscience by investing in the most sophisticated technology that gives its specialists an edge in diagnosing and treating disease.

“As a life sciences educator and an advocate for creating a strong science and technology workforce in new Jersey and increasing participation of women in science and engineering, I am very excited about attracting students who are interested in the convergence of technology and science”, says Forough Ghahramani,  Director of the Electroneurodiagnostic Technology program for DeVry University North Brunswick.
