Case Studies in Drug Discovery and Development -Advanced Topics in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics The pilot course for Rutgers upcoming Professional Science Masters Degree Programs will cover the drug lifecycle (discovery through commercialization) through case studies. For those who are looking to develop their leadership ability but are not interested in pursuing traditional MBA or PhD programs, these programs will provide the mix of technical and managerial skills needed to translate research into practice. Martin, Director of Education, Rutgers Division of Life Sciences David Finegold, Dean, School of Management and Labor Relations Pradip Banerjee,The Banerjee Group The course will provide an industry overview and orientation of the process of the development of a pharmaceutical product. An interactive case study format will be used to study the developmental history of specific drug candidates throughout the course, starting with the target identification and method of drug discovery, through the development of lead compounds, patent filings, drug refinement, clinical trials, regulatory approvals and marketing processes. These sessions will be led by members of the pharmaceutical industry who will discuss their roles in the developmental pipeline. During the semester students will have opportunities to visit pharmaceutical company laboratories to gain first hand understanding. Students assigned to teams will integrate their learning by mapping the different approaches being developed in a specific therapeutic area out to 2015-2020. The course is geared toward employees of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, MS and PhD level graduate students in the Life Sciences, School of Business, School of Pharmacy, and School of Biomedical Engineering.
