A Look Inside the Rutgers EcoComplex Environmental innovation is a springboard for economic development. The EcoComplex is dedicated to moving science from the lab to real-world applications in our state's businesses and industries, and to promoting New Jersey as a center for environmental innovation and enterprises. The Center, a partnership with the Burlington County Board of Freeholders, performs research and develops new technologies to address the pressing issues faced in New Jersey around water resources, solid waste management, renewable energy, and controlled environmental agriculture. The EcoComplex functions as a hub of education and outreach for the entire environmental community. In September 2006, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities retained the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station to evaluate the state’s bioenergy potential. As one of the off-campus stations for the NJAES, the EcoComplex contributed to this study, which led to a list of 20 research areas related to bio-energy. Through environmental technology demonstrations, the Center verifies effectiveness of new technological developments and provide investors and entrepreneurs with value assessments of new technologies. This enhances the performance and commercial viability of new environmental technologies. Additionally, the Center helps start-up businesses get started in the market.
