Scholarship Competition for Central New Jersey High School Seniors

It's time once again for the Association of Women In Science – Central Jersey Chapter (AWIS-CJC) Scholarships.  Each year, AWIS-CJC awards scholarships to students pursuing careers in science or technology. Winners will receive cash prizes and a certificate -- $500 first prize and two $250 runner-up awards.

This scholarship is open to High School Seniors in the Central Jersey area (Mercer, Monmouth, Middlesex, Hunterdon, and Somerset Counties).  The entry description is below, along with a URL to learn more. 

Who Can Enter:
This competition is only for high school seniors -- students who will be graduating the summer of 2008.

How To Enter - Please Submit:
- your name, address, e-mail address and phone number.
- an essay on the topic below. Keep it less than 500 words.
- information about your GPA, class rank (if available), and extracurricular activities.
- a recommendation letter. (If e-mailed separately, please have the recommender include your name alongside "Scholarship 2008" in the Subject field.)

E-mail your application in Microsoft Word or text format to awis_cjc@yahoo.com

The subject of your e-mail--addressed to Dr. Michael Shakarjian, Scholarship Chair--should be "Scholarship 2008".
Submissions are accepted until 11:59 pm, May 27, 2008.  Winners will be notified by June 30, 2008.

Topic:
Can you think of a woman scientist who you find to be particularly special?  This woman scientist may work in any field, be from anywhere in the world and any time in history, from the ancient past to the present day.  She may be very famous, or not well known at all.  Write a short essay describing why you might admire this person, be it her qualities, her accomplishments, her challenges, etc.  Does she inspire you to become a woman scientist? If so, how?

Hints for Success:
We welcome responses that are creative and practical, written in clear and well-constructed English.
